EXTRA NEWS:
Yoga Legion Extra Session, Wednesday, November 5, 6:30 PM: We are starting up a midweek session to get you over the hump at the Post! This is an opportunity to wash away the grime of everyday life in the hectic world of Arlington and the DC Metro area and focus on the important things — like volunteering at your Local Post and feeling blue about the shutdown? Upset that the Commanders took it on the chin, again? Sad that you weren't able to spend your Sunday morning with the MCM Clean-up Team? Join your Post mates in a short Yoga Session led by our own Chris G. Please sign up here.
Yoga Nidra and Gong Retreat, November 8th, 11:30 AM - Are you a little stressed out by the upcoming holiday season? Worried about the Thanksgiving football confrontations? Need to put a rough couple of months behind you? Join your comrades in a 2-hour Yoga Nidra session with a soothing Gong Bath. This is a self-paced Yoga session led by our own Chris G, featuring a mix of solid stretching and gentle poses, combined with a relaxing gong bath. Plenty of space at the Post, put aside your inhibitions and worries about whether you are doing the poses right, and concentrate on your inner self for 2 hours. Free for Post members! Sign up here:

Veterans Day Buddy Poppy Drive - November 3rd through 10th - Join us to distribute Buddy Poppies to Arlingtonians and help them remember the veterans in their lives. We are working in two locations this year: FT Myer Commissary and Lyon Plaza (3121 Langston Blvd.). We will also be asking for donations to support our Post’s Relief Fund.
- To sign up for a shift at the FT Myer Commissary (November 3 through 7), please click here: FT Myer Buddy Poppy Shift.
- To sign up for a shift at Lyon Plaza (November 8 through 10), please click here: Lyon Plaza Buddy Poppy Shift.
USMC Birthday, November 10th, 5 PM - Join your Marine comrades as they celebrate their 250th Birthday! We will start with the Post, which will be open at 5 PM, followed by cocktail hour at 6 PM, and a Free Mission BBQ dinner at 7 PM. Following that, the Post’s own JD Spain (Arlington County Board Member and nice guy) will speak about his experiences in the Marines and how it has shaped his life. After that, the bar will reopen until it closes. Even if you are not a Marine, help them remember their service and the sacrifices of their comrades.
Veterans Day Ceremonies, November 11, 11 AM: We are hosting three events on Veterans Day this year. Please come and join us for one, two, or three of the events. We will start the day off with our traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Clarendon War Memorial at 11 AM (3199 Clarendon BLVD, opposite the Clarendon Metro Station). Congressman Beyer and several local leaders will join us. At 12 PM, we will hold our Bell Ringing Ceremony at the John Lyon Memorial (3710 Langston Boulevard, across from the Safeway). After that ceremony, we will head to the Post and hold our Post Open House. This year, we will be joined by our friends from First Command and Colonial Downs as they present checks to the Post.
Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities: We are approaching several significant milestones for the Post! October through December keep the Post hopping, here are some events we will need a point of contact (POC) to coordinate or assist, and a pile of volunteers for:
Veterans Day - November 11th, 11 AM until 1 PM - Coordinate the Wreath Laying ceremonies for the Post at the Clarendon War Memorial and the John Lyon Memorial. This will include a formal ceremony, coordinated with the other VSOs in town, as well as a shorter ceremony at the John Lyon Memorial.
Thanksgiving Basket Coordination - November 22nd, 9 AM - Assist Cathy, Larry, and our Auxiliary in contacting potential donors, collaborating with Joint Base Henderson Hall and Fort Myer Family Advocacy to identify families, assemble the baskets, and distribute them.
Post-Thanksgiving Potluck - November 27th, 2 PM - Eva Fulton has stepped up to coordinate this potluck. We will discuss it more at the October and November meetings. There will be at least two turkeys cooked up . . . . Sign up here:
John Lyon Post 3150 Thanksgiving Pot Luck
Christmas Basket and Party - December 13th - TBD - Volunteers are needed to coordinate and assist with these events. Santa has been alerted and is standing by. If you are interested in helping out at one of these events, please get in touch with the Post Senior Vice Commander by clicking on the link and sending a short note.
Veterans in Need:
The Post has received requests from Veterans in need in the past few weeks. Here is some info from the Virginia Department of Veteran Services that can help out:
In Fairfax or Arlington County: Contact edwin.robles@dvs.virginia.gov
Outside of Fairfax or Arlington County, fill out a request form on: https://vvn.dvs.virginia.gov/form/VVFSIntakeForm
If you have the resources to donate money for assisting anyone, the Virginia Department of Veteran Services recommends donating to:
Send a check to: Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans of America, PO Box 2111, Reston, VA 20195
Donate to: https://nationofpatriots.networkforgood.com/projects/222597-2024-patriot-tour.
Donations: We still have two donation buttons on the weekly update. Here's why. Our legal case is proceeding, as is our Zoning Infractions case. Both of these cases have reached a point where we need to dedicate resources to them. For the zoning case, we will need approximately $7,000 for a property title search and a certified survey of our property. Additionally, we will require a minimum of $36,000 for legal fees for both cases.
We cannot raise this money by selling beer, wings, and pizza on Friday and Saturday nights. We need donations to support our legal battle against a neighbor with substantial financial resources.
We have two members who will match donations up to $1,750 per month, but we will need more than that to sustain the fight.
We are starting to do some great things—Veterans and Memorial Day Ceremonies, supporting Veterans and Military members experiencing Food Insecurity, OPERATION WINTERHAVEN Homeless Veteran Stand Down with the DC VA Hospital, Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, and parties for Service members in need.
Please donate here: Donation to the Post's Legal Defense Fund.
Donation: Our programs support our service members while they are deployed, but they often get discharged long after returning home. Your tax-deductible donation will help serve VFW programs where your support is most urgently needed.
